The power of the pen!
I’ve undertaken specialised training in the field of therapeutic writing and journaling, so am equipped to give writing and the written word a more central place in the counselling process, if desired. This might draw on any number of forms and tools, including journaling, free-writing, poetry, metaphor, lists, letters, dialogues, and word associations.
Depending on the individual client, therapy sessions using writing might consist of some combination of talking, writing, sharing and reflecting on what has been written – for others, the writing element may be more of a tool to dig deeper between appointments (e.g. by journaling or writing poetry), with the sessions themselves more centered around traditional verbal exploration but informed by the client’s experience and/or sharing of what they have written. The focus is on process, not product, meaning that we use writing as a tool for authentic self-expression and exploration, rather than something that needs to be polished and ‘perfect.’
I also offer mentoring sessions for those that are interested in using therapeutic writing in their own personal/professional lives, e.g. through running workshops/groups in their communities or workplaces. In this case, our space would be to explore ideas, brainstorm possibilities, and offer guidance and support based on my extensive experience as a facilitator and educator (check out the Workshops + Mentoring section to learn more).
